Password Management System

The Urban Institute self-service password reset system allows users to change and reset their password without calling the Help Desk.

To avail yourself of this service, you will need to enroll before you have need of it.

To enroll, you must know your password and your account CANNOT be locked.

After enrolling, if you ever find you’ve forgotten your password and need to reset it, just go to my.urban.org.

At the bottom of that page you will see “Forgot Password.”

Click there to begin the reset process.

How to Access the password reset system

To access the Urban Institute Self-Service Password Reset system, please visit https://apr.urban.org/pwreset/

Or

my.urban.org, at the bottom of the page, click, Forgot Password.

If your PC is locked, you will need to use a different device, such as a mobile phone, to access the password management system.

How to Enroll in the password reset system

Once you are on the Urban Institute Password Reset page, click Enroll, to begin the sign up process.

On the enrollment page, you will be prompted to:

  • Type in your Urban username and password.
  • Type in the secondary email address you want to use on this system.
  • Select and answer three security questions, then click Next.

If you make an error, such as typing your password incorrectly, you will be prompted to try again.

You will know you have successfully changed your password when see the following message.

Click on “OKAY” to exit.

How to Reset your password

To reset your password, you must be enrolled in the Urban Password Reset system.

Go to my.urban.org, at the bottom of the page, click, Forgot Password.

On the Urban Institute Password Reset page click on Reset

Enter your Urban Institute network user name, and then click Next

You will be prompted to answer your 3 security questions, click Next after entering your answers.

A verification code will be sent to the Secondary e-mail address you entered when enrolling.

Open your Secondary email account to get the code.

Enter the code where indicated, then click Next.

You will be instructed not to leave your computer at this point until the password is reset.

If you receive the error below, you must begin the password reset process again.

The verification code is only valid for 1 minute.

Once you have entered the verification code without error you will see this screen.

Type in a new password in the New Password and Confirm Password fields, then click Next

You will know you have successfully reset your password when see the message below.

How to Unlock your account

To Unlock your password, you must be enrolled in the Urban Password Reset system.

Go to my.urban.org, at the bottom of the page, click, Forgot Password.

On the Urban Institute Password Reset page click on Unlock

Password reset main menu, options are enroll, reset, unlock, change

Enter your Urban Institute network user name, and then click Next

When prompted, answer your 3 security questions. Click Next.

A verification code will be sent to the Secondary e-mail address you entered when enrolling.

Open your Secondary email account to get the code.

Enter the code where indicated, then click Next.

You will know you have successfully unlocked your account when see the following message.

How to Change your password

To Change your current Urban Institute network password, you will need to know your current password. You do not need to be enrolled in the password reset system to use this feature.

Go to my.urban.org , at the bottom of the page, click, Forgot Password.

On the Urban Institute Password Reset page click on Change

In the Old Password filed, enter your current password.

In the New Password and Confirm Password fields, Type in a new password, and then click Next

You will know you have successfully changed your password when see the following message.
